Day 24 Berndnaut Smilde case study photo 3

  • Date taken (approx.): 2008
  • Location: A gallery
  • What do you like about this photo?

I like this photo as it has a moody feel to it making you think the person in the picture is lonely and sad it gives it a sad feel but the colours in the room denote happy things so it is a good contrast between sad lonely painting and happy colours.

  • What could you learn from this photograph/photographer? How could you use it in your own work?

I learned that you don’t have to have an overcrowded image to make it look good. Just using colours and one subject make it look good.

I could use this by doing pictures of lonely objects but contrasting with happy things.

  • What do you like about this photo?

My favourite thing from this photo is the fact he has made a model home with windows and everything and its out of a paper bag which isn’t a very appealing item but he has made it look quite appealing and really nice.

Its quite a simple photo but I presume a lot of work would have gone in to making the bag look like a house.

  • What could you learn from this photograph/photographer? How could you use it in your own work?

I learned that the image doesn’t have to be creative because you could have a creative idea inside the photo that makes it look good.

I could use this in my own projects by making objects out of rubbish and unused objects.

  • Photographer: Berndnaut Smilde
  • Date taken (approx): 2010
  • Location: A room
  • What do you like about this photo?

I think this an alright photo as the lighting is good and the contrast of the red floor and blue walls. The blue walls are good as they give the fell of sky and the clouds in the sky so it’s like a simulated sky.

I personally don’t like the clouds how they have been used as by having so much equipment needed to make the clouds shape and the photographer has obviously Photoshopped the machinery out.

I like how the colours can mean Britains red white and blue aswell as blue and white simulating the sky

  • What could you learn from this photograph/photographer? How could you use it in your own work?

From this I could learn how to take the photos of clouds but I would have to do the research first.

I could use in my own work for a surrealism effect to an image.

Day 24 Nature Photo 3

• Date taken: 15/02/2013
• Location: Hill top farm in stapleford
• Settings: Shutter Speed 1/640 | Aperture f/5.3 | ISO 100
• What do you like about this photo? How well does it work?
I like this image because it is very different animals to have pictures of as normally chickens would run away from people but I managed to get close without my long zoom. I think I think the lighting is perfect and the chicken looks properly lit and rightly exposed to say the weather wasn’t brilliantly light. I like the contrast between the white of the chicken and the green grass.
• What did you learn from this experiment? If you had to take this photo again what would you do differently?
From this experiment I learned that you have to be stealthy to get close ups of nature and to not disturb and frighten the animals.
If I were to do it again I would try and get a second element in the image to contrast it with.

Day 24 Nature Photo 2

• Date taken: 15/02/2013
• Location: Attenborough Nature Reserve
• Settings: Shutter Speed 1/6,000 | Aperture F/5.6 | ISO 100
• What do you like about this photo? How well does it work?
For this image I boosted the contrast to make the image look bolder and better-looking image in general. I like the close up of the image by using my zoom lens to not disturb them from what they were doing. I also like the fact that I have captured the birds doing a very natural thing by the fact the mummy bird is feeding its baby which I thought was a very good thing for the topic of todays which was nature and this is a nature shot at its best with the feeding which is normally seen in nature films only.
• What did you learn from this experiment? If you had to take this photo again what would you do differently?
I learnt that having patience is very good, as I had to keep trying to get the birds in the right position so I could get it with them feeding each other as I couldn’t move to much or I would scare them.
If I was to do it again I would try and get a little closer with my body so there ist as much excess.

Day 24 Nature Photo 1

• Date taken: 15/02/2013
• Location: Attenborough Nature Reserve
• Settings: Shutter Speed 1/6,000 | Aperture F/5.6 | ISO 100
• What do you like about this photo? How well does it work?
I love this image as I think it is perfect in every way. Firstly I like how close up the image is to the subject without scaring the swans out of doing what they were doing. The reason I could get so close is because I had my zoom lens on which allows me to get close to the subject without disturbing it. The second thing I like about this image is the colour of the water as it is a deep dark blue and looks very nice. The swans are their natural colour with no edits done to get rid of imperfections. I like the fact both the swans are doing something and not just looking at the camera it is like social realism but for swans.
• What did you learn from this experiment? If you had to take this photo again what would you do differently?
From this experiment I learned that to take a picture of nature you have to use a zoom so you can get close to them without disturbing their natural life.
If I had to take again I would maybe zoom out more and do rule of thirds and put the swans offset to the left zoom in really close to certain parts of the swans.

Day 23 Food

• Date taken: 14/02/2013
• Location: My House
• Settings: Shutter Speed 1/60 | Aperture f/8 | ISO 100
• What do you like about this photo? How well does it work?
This was my breakfast this morning just to make you all jealous cause it was gorgeous. Things I like about this image include the colour as the vibrant colours capture the true to life look of the food and makes it look like you could eat it right there and then because it looks so real even on the screen. I like the contrast of the colours with the oranges and browns and whites make the picture stand out because the bold colours contrast each other. I think it is a very good high contrast well composed image and looks good. I like the edge blur I added after on photoshop.
• What did you learn from this experiment? If you had to take this photo again what would you do differently?
I learned that food photography can be really interesting and I feel it is better to do food photography in a natural environment rather than in a made up studio because it has a more real feel to it.
If I was to do it again I would try it with different foods and possibly from different angles to make it look better.

Day 21 Technology test shots

_DSC0011

These are my test shots i took before taking the actual ones that i have already uploaded. The reason these were only test shots was the fact I did not think they looked good compositionally because they are very plain this is why i decided to do the keyboards instead.

Day 21 Technology Photo 1

New Laptop

  • Date taken: 13/02/2013
  • Location: My House
  • Settings: Shutter Speed 1/25 | Aperture f3.5 | ISO 100
  • What do you like about this photo? How well does it work?

I chose to upload to similar photos in each post because I want to show the contrast between old and new technology.  I like the depth in these images as it is focussed on the keys closest to the camera with the background out of focus, which makes it look really cool because the keys sort of make lines in the laptops to draw you to the background. The focus is on the same keys in both images. I think the dust on the black laptop emphasises that it is an old laptop.

  • What did you learn from this experiment? If you had to take this photo again what would you do differently?

I learned from this that technology is a very hard topic to photograph because just putting old and new tech doesn’t work compositionally that is why I have done two photos similar for this post.  If I took the photo again I would try and think of better angles and ways to take the photo to show the difference of old and new laptops.

Day 20 Refine An Idea

_DSC0093 Original DSC_0050 New

  • What didn’t you like about the original photo?

The think I didn’t like about the original image was the fact the image was meant to show depth but ended up not showing it and just showing it as an object that looked like I took a photo of the ground. I didn’t really like the composition because I feel the image is to crowded. Also it looks a bit of a dull image.

  • Why is your new photo better?

I think this new photo shows the depth better in two ways, as there is a shallow depth of field as well as the fact the line of the rail leads you into the background which adds depth into the image. I like the colours in the image as the blurred green compared to the blue of the rail make it look good with slight contrast. I like the texture of this image as you can see the rust in the rail, which gives it a cool feel. I also like the fact the image isn’t as cluttered and generally looks better.
